## About Google Veo 3.1 Fast

Veo 3.1 Fast is the speed-and-cost tier of Google DeepMind's Veo 3.1 video family. Google released it into paid preview on October 15, 2025, the same day as the standard model, through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio and Vertex AI, and describes it as the faster, more cost-effective way to run Veo 3.1. In April 2026 Google cut its price again to widen developer access.

The Fast tier is built on the same Veo 3.1 release as the flagship, so the family-wide October 2025 improvements apply here too: richer native audio, better understanding of cinematic styles, and stronger character consistency in image-to-video work.

## Features

- Text-to-video and image-to-video generation on the Veo 3.1 foundation.
- Native audio is generated with the clip; the Veo 3.1 models produce dialogue, synchronized sound effects and ambience rather than silent video.
- Clips in the Veo 3.1 family run 8 seconds per generation.
- Improved narrative control and cinematic-style understanding, introduced across the Veo 3.1 models at the October 2025 release.
- Positioned for lower latency and lower cost per clip than standard Veo 3.1, with a further price reduction announced for April 7, 2026.
- Outputs carry Google's SynthID watermark, as across the Veo line.

## What people use it for

- Rapid iteration on prompts and shot ideas before committing a final render to the full-fidelity tier.
- High-volume short-form clips for social feeds where turnaround matters more than maximum resolution.
- Testing many variations of an ad or product concept cheaply from the same brief.
- Animating stills through image-to-video when the job is exploratory rather than final delivery.

## Reported strengths

- Same-day release with the flagship means the Fast tier shares the Veo 3.1 audio and consistency improvements instead of lagging a generation behind.
- Audio generation is included even on the budget tier, which many rival fast video models omit.
- Google has repeatedly lowered its price, first at launch positioning and again in April 2026, making it the family's workhorse for volume.
- Available through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio and Vertex AI, the same surfaces as the standard model.

## Reported limitations

- Google documents this tier on cost and speed grounds; later flagship-only announcements such as 4K output were made for standard Veo 3.1 and have not been documented for Fast.
- Like the rest of the family it launched as a paid preview rather than a generally available model.
- Single generations stay within the family's 8-second clip length, so longer pieces require multiple runs.
- Since April 2026 it is no longer the cheapest Veo option; Veo 3.1 Lite undercuts it at the same speed for high-volume work.

## What it's good at

- Executes camera direction: prompted with 'camera slowly pushes in on the cup', it delivered exactly that move — wide barista framing easing into a close-up as the latte art forms.
- Excellent temporal coherence in our wave test: rocks stay anchored, lighting stays consistent, and the wave arcs believably from build to crash to dissipation across the full clip.
- Ships usable extras by default: 8 seconds at 24fps with a native audio track, at some of the fastest generation times we measured for video (66-101s).

## Where it falls down

- Fine spray and particle highlights can show a subtle dither/moire-like texture in extreme-contrast backlit areas.
- Duration is model-driven: we asked for a 5-second-class clip and received 8 seconds — plan edits around its native length rather than expecting exact-duration output.
- The premium look costs a premium: per clip it ran 5x the price of the cheapest video model in our battery, before considering the Quality tier above it.

## Best for

- Directed camera moves
- Cinematic b-roll with audio
- Human subjects with object interaction

### 1080p: build-crash-dissipate arc with static rocks and native audio

Prompt: "A large ocean wave crashing over dark rocks at golden hour, slow motion, spray and droplets backlit by the sun"

### 1080p: the prompted push-in executed; clean hands and forming latte art

Prompt: "A barista pours latte art into a white cup in a bright café, camera slowly pushes in on the cup, steam rising"
