## About FLUX 2 Dev

FLUX 2 Dev is the open-weight member of Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 generation, launched on 25 November 2025. It is a 32-billion-parameter rectified flow transformer, and the FLUX.2 family couples that flow backbone with a Mistral-3 24-billion-parameter vision-language model as text encoder. At release Black Forest Labs called it the most powerful open-weight image generation and editing model available.

One checkpoint handles text-to-image generation, single-reference editing and multi-reference editing. On Artifio it runs next to 100+ other models in a single pay-per-generation workspace.

## Features

- 32-billion-parameter rectified flow transformer with open weights
- Text-to-image generation and image editing unified in one model
- Multi-reference editing that keeps characters, objects and styles consistent without extra training; Black Forest Labs' docs recommend at most 6 reference images
- Image editing at up to 4-megapixel output, a FLUX.2 family capability
- Text rendering for typography, infographics and UI mockups, a family-level strength
- 4-bit quantized builds and a remote text-encoder option bring it onto consumer GPUs such as the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090

## What people use it for

- Self-hosted generation and editing pipelines built on open weights
- Compositions that combine several reference images into one consistent scene
- Character and product consistency work across a series of images
- Research and development on a frontier-scale open image model

## Reported strengths

- Black Forest Labs reports it beat all open-weight alternatives by a significant margin on text-to-image and editing evaluations at launch
- Generation and editing in one checkpoint simplifies pipelines that previously needed two models
- Quantization and the remote text-encoder option make a 32B model deployable on high-end consumer hardware

## Reported limitations

- The weights carry the FLUX non-commercial license; commercial self-hosting requires a separate license, though generated outputs can be used commercially under its terms
- At 32 billion parameters it needs a top-tier consumer GPU even with 4-bit quantization
- The docs recommend no more than 6 reference images, below the 8 to 10 supported on the hosted pro and max tiers
